Minimum Wage Increase to $12.00 per hour 1st April 2008

The Government announced on the 18th December 2007 that the adult minimum wage would increase from the current $11.25 per hour to $12.00 per hour, effective from the 1st April 2008.

This equates to a $0.75 per hour, $30.00 per week increase for the most lowly paid adult workers in the workforce.

Further, the minimum wage now applies to Disabled Persons. There is the provision for an employer to apply for an exemption certificate in a similar vein to the old under rate workers permits, however this is only able to be done if the parties agree that there is good reason why an employee should be paid at a rate less than the minimum wage.
